Abdulmajeed Muslot

It is believed that around 500 years ago, traders smuggled seedlings from Ethiopia and planted them in Yemen. For a long time, it was impossible for the outside world to catch a glimpse of the closely guarded terraces where coffee grew. And even today, coffee cultivation and trade in Yemen remain exciting, unique, and somewhat perplexing. All the more remarkable, then, that we eventually met someone who knew someone who knew a coffee trader from Yemen: Abdulmajeed Muslot.

Since 2017, we have been sourcing various beans from the Harazi and Sanani growing regions west of the capital Sana'a through Abdulmajeed. This coffee is a regional blend from the Sanani growing region, a rugged and mountainous area characterized by the typical terraced coffee plantations. Here, small-scale farmers cultivate coffee on plots, which is then centrally collected, dried, pre-sorted, and sent to Al-Hudaydah for the actual processing. In Al-Hudaydah, Abdulmajeed's team then takes over the final sorting and grading of the beans before the coffee is packaged and shipped from the port in Aden to Germany.

The distances coffee travels before ending up in the sack are significantly longer than in the rest of the world, where the aim is to keep routes as short as possible. And in general, many things are done differently in Yemeni coffee cultivation than elsewhere. All of this contributes to a unique flavor profile.

ORIGIN

Description

Chocolatey, earthy and complex, from a unique growing region.

Yemen was the first country to cultivate coffee intentionally and was for a long time the world's largest coffee producer. We can still see this legacy today: the most widespread coffee variety is called Arabica – named after the Arabian Peninsula.

It is all the more tragic that one of the world's most fascinating coffee cultures has been at war for years, making a visit to our partner Abdulmajeed Muslot impossible. Nevertheless, in 2022 we managed to meet him, his son, and his grandson in person – to be continued.
